I will be the first to admit that I’m kind of obsessed with homemade playdough. It lasts longer than the store bought kind, it smells better, it makes a great party favor, you can add glitter(!). The list goes on. Several weeks ago, when runny noses and fevers were keeping my little people home from school, I decided to add some of the essential oils I received for Christmas to some homemade playdough. The result was amazing! It smelled so good, I wanted to play with it. My son definitely did, especially since the scent seemed to make it a little easier for him to breathe. Step by Step Essential Oil Playdough
Playdough recipe adapted from Asia Citro’s amazing book –
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/3 cup salt
3/4 c water
1/4 c Liquid Watercolor(color will intensify as the playdough cooks)
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
Essential oil of your choice – make sure that the oil you choose will not be harmful if ingested. Kids always put things in their mouths.
Combine all ingredients, except oils in a pan on the stove. Whisk well to remove all lumps. Turn on stove to Medium High and begin stirring constantly – I find a wooden spoon works best for this. Continue stirring until playdough begins to stick together. When playdough is no longer wet looking, turn off the stove and remove pan from heat. CAREFULLY spoon the dough(which should be sticking together in ball by this point) on to a countertop surface and begin kneading.
The dough will be VERY HOT for the first few minutes, so don’t burn your fingers! If the dough is simply too hot, allowing it to cool for a few minutes is totally fine. Once the dough is cool enough, knead until you have a large, smooth, ball. Make a well in the ball with your fingers and add 2-3 drops of essential oils to the well. Fold the playdough in on itself and continue to knead until the oils are thoroughly combined! Voila! You have essential oil playdough.
